At Medfem Fertility Clinic our entire team takes a holistic approach to the art and science of fertility treatments. From our experienced reproduction specialists to our embryologists and administration staff, every single member of the team is 100% committed to providing you with the most positive experience imaginable. We have formed a collaborative, supportive team of professionals that communicates frequently with the goal of providing the best care for each patient.

Daily team meetings are held where each patient is discussed. Valued input from nurses who interact with the patient daily, embryologists who are intimate with the daily developments of the embryos in the lab, and specialists with years of experience is melded into treatment plan recommendations.

In addition, Medfem Fertility Clinic offers the largest staff-to-patient ratio of any fertility clinic in South Africa, ensuring all our patients receive the best care possible.

Dr Antonio Rodrigues is a founding member and director of Medfem Fertility Clinic. Tony is a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician and qualified at the University of the Witwatersrand, Gauteng, South Africa, graduating in 1979.

Dr Nicholas Clark

Reproductive Medicine Specialist / Director Medfem Fertility Clinic

Dr Nicholas Clark, a gynaecologist for over 15 years, joined Medfem Fertility Clinic in 2012 as a director. Nicholas qualified from University College and Middlesex School of Medicine in London in 1990. After completing his training in the United Kingdom and South Africa he was appointed as a consultant gynaecologist at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto.

Dr Lusanda Shimange-Matsose

Reproductive, Endocrine and Infertility Specialist / Director Medfem Fertility Clinic

Dr Lusanda Shimange-Matsose attained her medical degree from the University of Pretoria. She went on further to do her postgraduate degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Witwatersrand University (WITS) also completed her Master of Medicine degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She was involved in clinical care in the private and public sector.

Nursing Team

Sr. Eleanor is the newest member of the family of nurses at Medfem having joined the team earlier in 2015. Eleanor completed her studies at Ann Latsky Nursing College in 2000 and her Personal Trainers Certificate as a Health and Wellness Consultant at Reebok Fitness Institute in 2008. Eleanor has worked in the Middle East as an emergency room nurse, and has worked in day clinics within the Gauteng region as a registered nursing sister. Eleanor has spent many years working with pregnant and new moms, as well as baby clinics, diabetic clinics, and health and wellness clinics. She has vast experience in coaching individuals with health, wellness and weight issues. Eleanor’s goal is to support and assist people holistically through educating and supporting them with the needed compassion, patience and understanding that are needed for this life journey.

Sr Hanlie Monnery has been with Medfem Fertility Clinic since 2001 and is responsible for IVF coordination. Hanlie completed her nursing qualifications at Sharley Cribb in Port Elizabeth in general, community, psychiatric and midwifery. Prior to joining Medfem Fertility Clinic, Hanlie worked in both casualty and maternity. Hanlie is an integral part of the team helping to plan and deliver the care that provides the best possible experience for our patients. She has been helping patients who need an egg donor or surrogate since February 2020.

Sr Heather trained at the Johannesburg General Hospital and qualified as a registered nurse in 1981. Following this she completed her midwifery, paediatric nursing and community nursing diplomas. Heather has spent the last 11 years working within the field of assisted conception, about which she is very passionate. Prior to joining Medfem Fertility Clinic Heather worked at Johannesburg General Hospital for ten years, followed by a number of years in the obstetrics, gynaecological and infertility field. A positive and compassionate attitude towards her patients and excellent work ethics make Heather an invaluable asset to our clinic.

Sr Christina joined the Medfem team in 2015 as one of our IVF nurse coordinators. Christina began working in infertility coordination close to fifteen years ago and brings a wealth of knowledge to the team. Following her training in England in Hillingdon Hospital Middlesex, Christina moved to South Africa. Her career here has included working as a medical assessor, a nurse with Lancet, in a doctor’s room, and as an infertility coordinator. Christina handles all patients with professionalism and a real drive to achieve success for the intended parent(s). Her intimate involvement has led her to have strong meaningful bonds with her patients, who rely on her expertise to get then through even the most trying times.

Sr Cornie is the newest addition to our family of IVF nurses, having joined the Medfem Fertility Clinic team in 2013. Cornie completed her nursing qualifications at Ann Latsky Nursing College in general, community, psychiatric and midwifery. She has 23 years of work experience, 11 years in Health, Fitness and Nutrition Coaching, and 12 years of nursing experience. Cornie has quickly become a valuable asset to our team with excellent clinical skills, attention to detail, professionalism, and a kind and supportive attitude. Cornie supports our specialists with reproductive patient care. Cornie’s caring and kind demeanour is always appreciated by our patients.

IVF Laboratory Team

Edolene Bosman has been working for Medfem in the IVF laboratory since it was first established in 1989. She completed her MSc at The Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) in 1986 and then joined the IVF team at the Pretoria Academic Hospital where she registered with the HPCSA as an Embryologist. While working at the Academic Hospital, she had the opportunity to participate in research programmes and has also published several articles during this time. She further broadened her knowledge and experience in Andrology when she joined a routine pathology laboratory and a few years later, went on to establish the Andrology Laboratory at Medfem Clinic when she joined the practise. She also assisted in launching the Medfem donor sperm bank in 1990 and we are still assisting many patients in reaching their dreams through this treatment option. Her main interest is male infertility and cryopreservation. Edolene has pursued furthering her education and completed her doctorate studies at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in 2014. Her study titled “The Influence of insulin on male infertility”, has contributed to understanding the detrimental effect on IVF outcomes and helped to gain important clinical data in this field. The articles published on this subject have been well received internationally and has been, according to the BioMedLib, one of the top 20 most read articles in this scientific domain. She was also invited to have her work published in the handbook titled: Handbook of Fertility: Nutrition, Diet, Lifestyle and Reproductive Health. Edolene has recently been recognised for the position of Lab Director and is privileged to be working with a highly qualified team with various skills and extensive knowledge in the reproductive field. One of her first projects as Lab Director was to supervise the lab’s participation in an international culture media trial. Medfem is proud of the outstanding results that were obtained from this study. Edolene looks forward to introducing new technologies in the lab and she constantly strives to improve the quality.

Vicky Wolf currently holds the position of senior embryologist at Medfem clinic with 18 years of experience in the IVF field. She completed her B. Tech in Clinical Technology: Reproductive Biology in 2005 at the Central University of Technology and internship at Medfem clinic. Vicky served on the Southern African Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG) as secretary and as a representative for the Gauteng Special interest Group (SIG). She also held the position of laboratory manager and training embryologist from 2015 to 2017. It was also in this time that she received her M. Tech degree in Clinical Technology: Reproductive Biology from Tswane University of Technology while working full time at Medfem fertility clinic. In 2018, she had an exciting time in completing a course in ovaria freezing and attended a workshop that was held in 2021 in Johannesburg, South Africa with the hope of helping oncology patients in the future. Vicky is responsible for the running of the sperm donor bank together with the day to day working of the IVF laboratory. She is also responsible for Medfem’ data contribution to the African Network and Registry for Assisted Reproductive Technology (ANARA) since 2019. “I love working with my IVF team members, we are a family away from home. We strive to make a difference in Medfem patients’ lives and being passionate in trying out new technologies available on the market”.

Margaretha Janse van Rensburg completed Clinical Technologist and Biochemistry Diploma at Tygerberg Hospital Medical School in 1982. During this time she worked in the isotope department of the Endocrinology Laboratory, and was part of the team that participated in projects with the IVF lab of Tygerberg Hospital.

Marlize obtained her B.Sc. degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Stellenbosch University. She passed her Honours Degree (Cum Laude) in Medical Sciences (Reproductive Biology) in 2012. From 2013 to 2014 Marlize did her Medical Biological Internship at Tygerberg Hospital and Aevitas fertility clinic after which she was registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Scientist (Embryologist). In March 2015 she obtained her M.Sc. Degree (Cum Laude) in Medical Sciences (Reproductive Biology) under the leadership of Dr Windt De Beer and Prof Kruger. She was employed as a full-time embryologist at Aevitas Fertility in Cape Town in 2015 and 2016. In January 2017 she moved to Gauteng and joined the Medfem fertility team.

Monique joined the Medfem team in 2021 and continues to be passionate about her work. Monique Wheeler obtained her BHSc degree in Human Genetics from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2018, Monique was enrolled as a Medical Biological Scientist intern at Steve Biko Academic hospital where she completed her theoretical and practical training. Ever since, Monique has been enjoying every aspect of being a qualified Embryologist and having the opportunity of changing people’s lives.

Robyn obtained her undergraduate (BSc Human Life Sciences) and postgraduate (BScHons Medical Physiology) degrees at Stellenbosch University in 2020. She went on to complete her Medical Biological Internship at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in 2022. As a fully qualified embryologist, Robyn really enjoys interacting with patients and being a part of their journey to becoming a family.

Cathleen joined the Medfem team early in 2019. Cathleen has a solid understanding in patient needs and is always willing to assist with general queries. She also works with sperm donors to import and export across the globe at Medfem. She provides donors and donor information for patients. Cathleen is also responsible for all general administrative duties including answering e-mails and has a reputation for being friendly, informed, and aware of patient’s needs and requirements. She is well loved by patients and colleagues and is an integral link of the IVF chain. She is also responsible for the frontline reception and is normally the first friendly face the patients see.

Swazi is also professional when it comes to our patient needs.

Mandy Rodrigues is a clinical psychologist in private practice. She has been involved in the field of infertility for eighteen years, working with individuals, groups and couples. Her research has involved looking at the relationship between stress and infertility, culminating in an on-line stress management course and the co-authoring of a book entitled “Time Urgency Perfectionism Stress and Your health.” The findings in this research have been presented and recognised internationally.
