(The courier is independent from Medfem. All agreements including costs with the courier is between the patient and the courier.)
The import and export of human semen and gametes play a crucial role in supporting individuals and couples seeking fertility treatment worldwide. This process enables access to diverse donor options and advanced reproductive technologies, helping fulfil the dream of parenthood for many.
All activities related to the international transportation of gametes are conducted under strict regulatory frameworks to ensure safety, legality, and ethical compliance. Import and export permits are mandatory and must be obtained in accordance with the laws of both the originating and receiving countries. These permits ensure adherence to health standards, such as rigorous screening for infectious diseases and genetic conditions.
Cryopreservation techniques are used to maintain the quality and viability of gametes during freezing and transit. It is therefore important to make use of accredited fertility centres that are qualified and equipped in handling your samples. We will provide the receiving lab with relevant information on the techniques and products used for the cryopreservation of your sample/s.
An application needs to be emailed to Department of Health to receive an import/export permit. The permit will then be sent to the clinic (receiver or collector) for arrangements.
Our IVF laboratory will assist you in applying for an import permit through the Department of Health, South Africa.
Once the permit is issued, it becomes the patient’s responsibility to:
1. Notify the relevant institution to release the embryos/sperm from cryostorage.
2. Arrange transportation by booking a courier service.
Please note that most courier companies require payment in advance before delivery can be completed.
We recommend using Kynisi Courier Systems Limited [(+44 (0)20 735 70001 | kosta@kynisi.com) comprehensive services, who are well-versed in handling import restrictions and customs requirements.
For assistance with the import application, Medfem will charge a small handling fee.
Additionally, courier fees will be applicable:
1. Medfem handling fee: R1 734.00
2. Courier fees (quoted directly by Kynisi)
Should you prefer alternative couriers, the lab can provide details of other companies previously used by patients.
Please note that Medfem cannot accept responsibility for any issues that may arise during the transportation of oocytes, embryos, or sperm to their destination. We advise patients to confirm all arrangements and ensure compliance with relevant regulations to avoid delays.
