How ovulation works
Ovulation usually takes place around the middle of the 28-day menstrual cycle, on approximately the fourteenth day.
This is halfway into the average 28-day cycle: the first day of the cycle is the day the bleeding begins: and so it is also the first day of a period.
A period ends when the bleeding ends. On average among women, a period can last five days, but for some women it can last for just three days and for others it can last for as many as eight days. Most women report that the bleeding is often heaviest on the first two days.
Usually, the bleeding stops between six and fourteen days into the cycle. This is because the uterine lining is again preparing itself for a possible pregnancy by growing thicker.
As mentioned, ovulation takes place on approximately the fourteenth day, around the middle of the 28-day cycle. Ovulation is when the egg is released from an ovary, and moves down the fallopian tubes to the uterus. Healthy sperm present in the fallopian tubes at this time can fertilise the egg.
If fertilised, the egg will move to the uterus and implant itself in the thickened uterine lining.
If, however, the egg isn’t fertilised or the embryo fails to implant, the uterus will shed the lining through bleeding, which marks the start of day one of the next menstrual cycle of around 28-days.
The length of time between one period and the next period can be just 21 days or as long as up to 35 days.
What is an ovulation calculator?
An ovulation calculator uses the dates of your own menstrual cycle to determine as closely as possible the days in a month on which you will be most fertile.
These days of high fertility fall on different dates each month, even for the same woman, for a number of reasons.
The first is that the typical 28-day menstrual cycle is shorter than a typical 30-day month. Other reasons include the differences among women – because each woman is different! – as well as the changes in the same woman from one month to the next.
Why do you need an ovulation calculator?
There are really just six days during an average 28-day menstrual cycle on which conception can happen. This is called your ‘fertile window’. However, as explained above, these six days do not fall on the same dates each month.
An ovulation calculator tells you when your next fertile window will most likely be.
Knowing when your fertile window is – on which days of the month you are most fertile – allows you to know on which days your chances of falling pregnant by having unprotected sex are significantly higher.
How does an ovulation calculator work?
An ovulation calculator uses information about your period to provide a best estimate of when you will ovulate and your next fertile window will start.
Ovulation usually occurs around fourteen days into your cycle. It is that special time when an egg is released and is available for fertilisation for a short time – it could be for as little as twelve hours or up to forty-eight hours.
Because every woman is different, and because the same woman is also different from month to month, an ovulation calculator can only provide an ‘estimate’ of your fertile window.
This means that having unprotected sex during this period will not a guarantee a pregnancy, but it will definitely maximise your chances of falling pregnant. Conversely, abstaining from sex during your fertile window cannot guarantee successful birth control.
When is your next fertile window?
Knowing on which the days of the month are high fertility days can help you to increase your chances of getting pregnant.
