A Little Background

With more than 100 years of collective experience diagnosing and treating infertility, Medfem Fertility Clinic is a national leader in fertility care. Since 1980, our specialist team has played a critical role in bringing more than 16,000 babies into the world. We are very proud of our high rate of pregnancies and live births per transfer.

Having successfully implemented some of the very first IVF procedures in South Africa, the fertility specialists at Medfem Fertility Clinic are nationally and internationally recognised as pioneers and innovators in the field of infertility treatment. Our very own Dr Johan van Schouwenburg was involved in the first successful IVF treatment carried out in South Africa in 1983.

Our state-of-the-art clinic was opened in 1992 and combines consultation offices, exam rooms, laboratory facilities, and a surgical suite in one convenient location. Medfem Fertility Clinic offers the full spectrum of fertility treatments including in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), assisted hatching, egg and sperm donation, gestational surrogacy, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), as well as more basic fertility procedures such as intrauterine inseminations (IUI). We also provide services for those who need microsurgical sperm aspiration or electroejaculation.

Core values of excellence and innovation in fertility treatment, holistic patient-centred care, teamwork, respect and integrity, passion, and leadership serve as our clinic’s foundation.

At Medfem Fertility Clinic our entire team takes a holistic approach to the art and science of fertility treatments. From our experienced reproduction specialists, to our embryologists and administration staff, every single member of the team is 100% committed to providing you with the most positive experience imaginable. We have formed a collaborative, supportive team of professionals that communicates frequently with the goal of providing the best care for each patient. Daily team meetings are held where each patient is discussed. Valued input from nurses who interact with the patient daily, embryologists who are intimate with the daily developments of the embryos in the lab, and specialists with years of experience is melded into treatment plan recommendations. In addition, Medfem Fertility Clinic offers the largest staff-to-patient ratio of any fertility clinic in South Africa, ensuring all our patients receive the best care possible.

Our directors include: Dr Nicholas Clark, Dr Tony Rodrigues, Dr Johan van Rensburg, and Dr Johan van Schouwenburg.

Patient satisfaction is a top priority and we strive to provide the best possible pregnancy rates in South Africa. The laboratory at Medfem Fertility Clinic was designed with a single purpose in mind – provide the best possible environment for successful embryo development. Our embryology lab meets stringent international standards and is continuously assessed to ensure it stays ahead of stated requirements. The lab is equipped with the full array of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, and is operated by the most capable and experienced embryology staff.
