Experience

Along with Professor Kruger, Dr van Schouwenburg performed the first IVF treatment in South Africa at the Tygerberg Hospital in 1983. Since then, he has remained at the forefront of the development of infertility services in South Africa for over 30 years and personally treated many thousands of patients with infertility problems.

In 1983, Dr van Schouwenburg co-established the In Vitro Fertilisation Unit at Tygerberg Hospital and the University of Stellenbosch, and two years later went on to co-establish the In Vitro Fertilisation Unit at Sandton Clinic. Since 1992, Dr van Schouwenburg has been practicing from the purpose-built Medfem Fertility Clinic.

During the more than 30 years of practice at Medfem Fertility Clinic, the team has performed an average of 1,100 IVF treatment cycles a year – that’s experience spanning more than 33,000 IVF cycles!

Expertise

Dr van Schouwenburg, one of Medfem Fertility Clinic’s founding members and directors, is nationally and internationally recognised as a pioneer and innovator in the field of infertility treatment. From 1988 to 1996, he was a founding committee member of the Association of Reproductive Biology of SA.

Dr van Schouwenburg’s additional areas of expertise include assisted reproduction technology and minimally invasive surgery. He is responsible for the technical development and management of Medfem Fertility Clinic’s sophisticated In Vitro Fertilisation laboratory including micromanipulation facilities, a biochemistry laboratory, microbiology laboratory, andrology laboratory and sperm bank. Medfem Fertility Clinic is one of the first institutions in South Africa to have developed a fully comprehensive operating theatre with all the necessary equipment for minimally invasive gynaecological surgery. Dr van Schouwenburg and his partners have had extensive training abroad and are teaching endoscopic surgery on an ongoing basis to visiting gynaecologists.

At Medfem Fertility Clinic, a centre of excellence in research and development (R&D), Dr van Schouwenburg is part of the team developing new procedures and achieving scientific breakthroughs, while receiving international acclaim for the results and insights gleaned from their research.
